The Diversity Visiting Medical Student Subinternship Program is a funded
program designed to give fourth-year medical students from
backgrounds historically underrepresented in medicine the opportunity to
experience the exceptional education in psychiatry offered by the University of
Washington. Students will spend four weeks on either an adult inpatient
psychiatry team at Harborview Medical Center or a child and adolescent
psychiatry inpatient team at Seattle Children’s Hospital between late August
and December, 2019. They will also attend resident didactics and teaching
conferences and will have the opportunity to go to clinic with a psychiatry
faculty member or resident once or twice during the rotation.
Funding for this program includes a $3,000 stipend for
reimbursement of travel and housing costs. Qualified applicants will be invited
to interview for the psychiatry residency program during their rotation.
Competitive applicants for funded subinternship positions will have
demonstrated academic excellence, strong leadership and extracurricular
experience, and a commitment to working with disadvantaged, underserved patient
populations. The program is open to applicants demonstrating the above, and who
come from backgrounds underrepresented in psychiatry. This includes African
Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, and Asian/Pacific Islanders.
Applicants must be strongly motivated to pursue a career in psychiatry and must
be in good standing in a U.S. medical school.
