Arriving & Departing Seattle
When planning your travel keep in mind that the conference will start at about 9am on Aug 4th and the last session will end at 12:30 pm on Aug 7th.
Most of you will be arriving via plane. SEATAC is the name of our airport, and it is a 30 minute drive from the University of Washington.
If you are renting a car, then exit the airport and look for Interstate 5 going north. The bulk of your drive is on this interstate. Exit at 45th street (exit #169), and turn right (east). Drive until you reach 15th avenue. This is the NW corner of the university proper. Turn right (south) onto 15th Ave. The enterence to the university closest to the physics building is on your left when you hit 40th Street. Navagatation will be slightly modified by your hotel's location, of course!
If you are not renting a car you have several option. A taxi to the university is about $45-$50 and takes about 30 minutes. You can also take a Shuttle, which are found in the lower level of SEATAC's parking garage (near the taxi stand near terminal 1). This will cost you about $20, and takes a little longer, depending on how many other passengers are in the shuttle. Be warned that the service likes to pick you up more than 2 hours before your flight! Finally, there is a combination of light rail and bus. Follow signs in the air poirnt to find the light rail terminal. After paying, board it and take it to the end of the line (Westlake). There, wait for the 70, 71, 72, or 73 bus. All these busses, via slightly different routes, will get you to the same stop at the university: Campus Way (ask the driver if you are unsure; most busses have lit overhead). From there it is a 5 minute walk to the physics building and a little longer to the hotels. The hotel walk is up hill a bit, so if you have heavy bags please keep this in mind.
The univeristy has plenty of parking on campus, especially during the summer. They will charge $15/day. When you enter the campus at Gate 5, near 15th Ave and 40th Street, pull up to the kiosk and ask for parking as you are attending a conference that will take place in the Architecture Building and Physics and Astoronmy building. After paying, they should direct you to lots C1 and C8, both of which are fairly close to the buildings. For complete details on UW parking, see the parking info page.
Getting Around Seattle
If you are staying at a hotel close to the campus I would recommend not renting a car. Instead, use taxi and bus service. Seattle also is a Car-to-Go city and also has zipcar (car-to-go requires a #35 one-time registration fee and then gives you access to cars there after, charging only by the minute - about half the cost of a taxi). A cab to Capital Hill or Freemont for Belltown for dinner will cost between $10 and $15 each way. Busses have direct lines to most destinations from around the university, and cost about $2.50 each way (depending on route).
You can easily rent a car at the airport if you wish. Some of the hotels will provide you with parking - inquire when you make a reservation. If your hotel is downtown or further away from the University and you wish to drive each day, please get in touch so that we can arrange parking.
